Natives
Aboriginals were the first settlers in North America, well before the Europeans explorers. They arrived by the Detroit of Bering more than 40,000 years ago. They settled everywhere on the continent and separated in many groups. Overall, 11 different Aboriginal tribes live in the province of Quebec. You will find them mostly in the regions of Montérégie, Outaouais, Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Mauricie, Baie-James, Nunavik, Bas-Saint-Laurent, Gaspésie, Laurentides, Québec, Duplessis and Manicouagan.
Most of the First Nations live in reservations located near large cities. These communities integrate well with the other Quebecers, but sometimes still live following their ancestral traditions. Most of the native communities welcome you to give you a tour of a typical traditional village and to teach you their history and traditions. Don't hesitate to discover the rich history of these tribes, who laid the foundations of Quebecers' culture.
