Farms
At the beginning, Quebec was a colony living mostly from agriculture. The St. Lawrence Lowland, located on the north and south shores of the river, is a land favourable to fruit and vegetables growing. Elsewhere in the province also the soil is fertile like in Saguenay - Lac-Saint-Jean, where they grow blueberries, on the Île d'Orléans, renowned for its tasty strawberries, or Neuville where a really tasty sweet corn is grown and finally in the Centre-du-Québec, which is known for its cranberries.
Agriculture in Quebec has left unquestionable marks in the regions. For example, in the Eastern Townships region, some round barns are still in very good condition. They were built like so for a better resistance against the strong winds. They are an important part of the built heritage of the province, just like the vegetable cellars in the Côte-de-Beaupré. Those cellars were used to preserve vegetables in the winter.
Quebec also has some breeding farms, like the emu farm in Charlevoix, or the bison farm on the Île d'Orléans. Some farms invite you to go on a guided tour of their land or of their interpretation centre. The owners will then explain you all the growing and transformation processes of some products. Take advantage of your day at the farm to sample Quebec's flavours!
