The Sugaring Season is Just Around the Corner!

ChocolatWhat would a Spring in Quebec issue be without an article about a sugar shacks? In Quebec, this activity has almost became a national sport with the popularity of sugar shacks in the spring season. Because the sugaring season is so short, many people try to take advantage of the joys of this activity. Besides a few sugar shacks that are opened year round, most of them are opened only for two or three months, in March, April and sometimes in May. This time, we have decided to present the Érablière Charbonneau in the Montérégie region.

This family sugar shack is another business owned by the Charbonneau, who are mainly known in the region for their orchards and their cider factory. While everyone is waiting for the fruit picking and cider-making season, let your stomach be tempted by a traditional sugar shack menu!

Charbonneau Sugar Shack
From March 1 to April 27, 2008, the Charbonneau Sugar Shack invites you to enter the spring, country atmosphere of Mont Saint-Grégoire. If you like dancing, come to the sugar shack on Fridays and Saturdays. After your meal, you will have the chance to dance the night away to the rhythms of music. It is the best way to digest everything you will have eaten! The menu is highly diversified and includes, among many other dishes, pea soup, cretons, oven-cooked omelettes, baked beans as well as the classic pork grills.

ChocolatSaturdays and Sundays are mainly reserved for horse-sleigh rides, during which you can discover the estate. This open-sky ride will allow you to see the large maple grove estate as well as the number of trees used to collect maple water and the techniques used to collect it. Back from your ride, you can visit the evaporation room where maple water is transformed into syrup and then into maple sugar and maple taffy.

For all kinds of events (wedding, baptism, etc.), rooms are available year round and can welcome at least 50 people. Country menus and table d’hôte meals are offered, in addition to a wine list. With its wood and log structure and walls, this shack will give you the impression of being in the heart of nature.

Denis Charbonneau Orchards and Cider Factory
At the end of spring, or maybe at the beginning of summer, come walk through the Denis Charbonneau orchard to breathe in the nice smell from the thousand trees in bloom. Over time, flowers become apples, thus allowing the production of delicious products. The Charbonneau, for their part, have decided to transform these fruit into cider. By the way, these ciders have won many prizes. In order to provide their ciders as well as other apple by-products year round, a kiosk has been built near one of the family’s orchards.

In Summer and Fall
In summer and fall, the kiosk abounds with berries, apples as well as maple products from the Charbonneau Sugar Shack. The neighbouring mini-farm will truly please children with its rabbits, peacocks, sheep and llamas. Do not hesitate to sit at the terrace or at the picnic areas to take advantage of the surrounding orchards.
